Chiefs Launch Samoan Appeal after deadly December Cyclone

With many of the Chiefs’ players closely linked to Samoa, the Chiefs’ family were keen to support the ravished country by launching an appeal for basic needs such as water, canned food and clothing.

During December 2012, parts of Samoa were decimated when a deadly Cyclone hit the country effecting nearly 4000 people and killing several.

Floods caused by Cyclone Evan washed away hundreds of homes, properties, churches and businesses. Uprising Fiji International 7's Tournament 2013 has concluded. View Results

The Uprising 7s tournament will be held at Lautoka’s Churchill Park from 18 to 19 January 2013

The Uprising International 7s tournament kicks off the 2013 local Sevens calendar, after the Fiji Rugby Union recently agreed to sanction the tournament after meeting with tournament organisers. This tournament always attracts National sides, Elite clubs and Super clubs.

In a meeting between FRU’s Chief Executive Manasa Baravilala and Uprising Resort owner Rene Munch and Uprising Resort Operations Manager James Pridgeon, they resolved pending requirements that the tournament organizers had to fulfill in order for FRU to sanction the tournament.

Manasa Baravilala was pleased that they had managed to resolve all outstanding matters. The New Zealand Rugby Union and the Australian Rugby Union would be advised on FRU’s endorsement and, the face to face meeting today with owner Rene Munch put to rest matters that has been outstanding for almost twelve months.... IRB confirms pools for Wellington New Zealand Sevens 2013

The IRB has confirmed the pool draw for round four of the HSBC Sevens World Series, the Hertz Sevens in Wellington, New Zealand on 1-2 February 2013.

The draw was made live on television before the Cup final of the Cell C Nelson Mandela Bay SA Sevens, the third round of the 2012/13 season, which was won by New Zealand.

As winners in South Africa, Wellington hosts New Zealand head Pool A and will face USA, England and Spain on day one.... Read More

USA Eagles Announced for 2013 Residency Program

USA Rugby is proud to announce the details for the 2013 Men’s and Women’s Eagles Residency Program.

“These are exciting times for USA Rugby because of our partnership with the United States Olympic Committee (USOC). The high performance facilities and experience they bring in supporting athletes for the Olympics is invaluable,” said USA Rugby CEO Nigel Melville.

Thirty-two players have been selected to train full-time at the Olympic Training Center (OTC) in Chula Vista, CA. The athletes will be living off-site, but have full use of the high performance facilities, including recovery and analysis equipment, sports psychologists and dietitians.... Read More

Auckland teams perform well on Day 1 Pub Charity 7s

The Auckland men’s team has made a solid start to their national sevens title defence with three wins from three on the opening day of the National Pub Charity Sevens competition.

It was a rusty first up performance against South Canterbury which captain Ed Cocker described as the team, “blowing out the cobwebs”.

Taranaki win NZ National 7's 2013 Men's Final / Manuwatu win 2013 Women's Final

UPDATE: Taranaki have won a first national provincial sevens title since 1982, thumping North Harbour 32-17 in the final in Queenstown. Mark Atkins scored a hat trick for Taranaki, who led 17-0 at halftime.

In the minor finals, Auckland won the Plate, Hawkes Bay won the Bowl and Counties Manukau won the Shield.

Women's teams appeared in Queenstown for the first time. Manawatu beat Waikato 36-17 in the final.... Read More

IRB approves global trial of extended TMO powers

The International Rugby Board and its Member Unions have underscored their ongoing commitment to consistent and accurate match officiating by approving a global trial to extend the powers of the television match official (TMO).

Applicable to both international and domestic competition from the beginning of the next respective season in the northern and southern hemispheres, the extended protocol will enable the referee to consult with the TMO to review up to two phases (rucks or mauls) before the ball is grounded in the act of scoring.

Alfred St. George Hamersley inducted into IRB Hall of Fame

The late Alfred St. George Hamersley K.C. J.P., M.P., one of Rugby’s first internationals, has been inducted into the IRB Hall of Fame.

IRB Chief Executive Brett Gosper made the presentation of the IRB Hall of Fame cap and pin to Marlborough College (England), where Hamersley was educated and first played ‘football’ under the interpretation of Rugby School rules.

One of life’s great achievers, Hamersley was a barrister by profession and later became an MP in his home county of Oxfordshire. ... Read More

Auckland Teams named for Queenstown National Sevens 2013

The Auckland men’s and women’s Sevens teams have been named to play at the National Pub Charity Sevens in Queenstown this weekend.

The men’s team features three current All Black Sevens representative while the women’s team has five players that were involved New Zealand's win at the World Series in Dubai.

The Springboks return to France for the first time since 2009, only be the third Test against the French since South Africa won the RWC in Paris in 2007.

The Springboks will end off a busy international season with a tour to Wales, Scotland and France in Europe in November this year, while the venues for the first two Springbok Tests of 2013 have been reversed to avoid an event clash.

The opening fixture of a new-look quadrangular tournament between the Springboks, their RWC 2015 opponents, Scotland and Samoa, as well as Italy, will now take place at Mr Price Kings Park in Durban on Saturday, June 8, 2013.
